Bassong heading to White Hart Lane

Thursday, August 6, 2009

Newcastle defender Sebastian Bassong is all set for a move to Tottenham Hotspur after a bid of £8million was accepted by Newcastle. Bassong stated his intention to leave Newcastle after they were relegated to the Championship.

Bassong joined Newcastle from Metz last year and throughout the campaign he was one of the clubs top performers. Spurs were keen to sign Bassong this summer as Harry Redknapp looks to strengthen his defence with injury worries for Ledley King, Michael Dawson and Jonathan Woodgate.

Bassong has been linked with a host of clubs this summer, including Everton, Manchester City and Spurs bitter rivals Arsenal. Bassong did state Tottenham would be his preferred option, and that he had to leave Newcastle if he wants to play for the French national side. I think that leaving Newcastle is the right option for Bassong, but in my opinion he might be in danger of falling down in the pecking order once Woodgate and King return to fitness.
