Real Madrid's Alonso bid accepted

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

Finally, after weeks of speculation, Liverpool have accepted a sizeable bid for Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso. Alonso's future has been in doubt all summer, but Liverpool boss did not want to part with his star midfielder, but has been forced to let him go after Alonso handed in a transfer request to force a move to Madrid.

The fee is believed to be in around £30 million and will make Alonso Madrid's fifth major signing, following Kaka, Benzema, Albiol and most notably Cristiano Ronaldo. Alonso's addition will be their first in the central midfield department, meaning the future of many of the Real players will be in doubt.

It was thought that Rafael Van Der Vaart or Wesley Sneijder would be part of the deal, but it seems the cash offer was enough for Liverpool to part with Alonso. However, the cash is likely to be used in signing a replacement, with Alberto Aquilani and recently Christian Poulsen linked with the Reds. However, in my opinion I don't think they will be able to replace Alonso. He is a quality player and in my opinion definitely value for money.
