Antonio Valencia, hit or miss?

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

A lot was expected from Alex Ferguson over the summer. The departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Teves fueled speculation that Fergie was going to be chasing some big names. However, this was not the case.

Antonio Valencia was arguably the biggest signing they made. £16.5 million from Wigan, Valencia was one of the most sought after wingers in the Premier League. Chelsea, Liverpool and Aston Villa were all keen to land to Ecuadorian international.

In my opinion, they are lucky to have been beaten to the chase. £16.5 million pounds was an awful lot of money to splash out on a player who, in my opinion, has not delivered the goods. Not even half the player of Ronaldo, struggling to look as impressive as Nani, which is not exactly a challenge. Some will argue that he is only new at the club, but you have to remember he has been plying his trade in England for the past few seasons, he should be used to it. In my opinion, that money could have been better spent elsewhere. It's not like there is a shortage of it at Manchester United anyway.

Valencia is from Ecuador. And was he not unarguably their biggest signing? They didn't pay near that much for anyone else and Michael Owen wasn't exactly huge...
