Can Arsenal handle Messi

Monday, March 22, 2010

For those of you who don't know, Lionel Messi scored another hat-trick for Barcelona during the weekend against Real Zaragoza. As most of you will know, Barcelona play Arsenal in the Champions League quarter final and the question has to be asked, can they handle Messi?

This season already Arsenal have been raped by arguably the two most dangerous players in the Premiership, Drogba and Rooney. And after being drawn against Barcelona Arsenal fans will fear suffering the wrath of Messi's brilliance. The Argentinian ace has scored 25 league goals this season, and is currently in fantastic form. The best player in the world at the moment? More than likely yes.

Messi usually plays on the right side of a Barcelona front three, and loves to cut inside and cause mayhem. Arsenal's left-back, Gael Clichy, is a great outlet going forward but has failed to impress defensively. Really to have a chance against Messi you need to have him double marked, meaning whoever plays on the left wing will have to make defence his top priority.

However, concentrating so much on Messi would be a mistake. Ibrahimovich, Henry, Xavi and Iniesta will all need to be closely monitored. Basically, Arsenal have their work cut out for them. Can they do it? In my opinion, no. No good enough defensively, especially with Campbell centre-back, but they do offer a lot going forward, just not as much as Barcelona do unfortunately.
