Arsene to make shock move for Viera

Thursday, July 30, 2009

Arsene Wenger is reportedly ready to bring back former captain Patrick Viera from Inter Milan to try an add some experience to the Arsenal squad. Viera is keen to leave Inter Milan and a host of clubs from England are interested, including Arsenal's rivals Tottenham. Arsene Wenger recently stated he will not panic buy after the loss of two key players, Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure.

Viera played for Arsenal from 1996-2005 where he won three Premier League tittles, one of which was the famous unbeaten season, and also four FA Cups. He left Arsenal for Juventus in 2005 where he spent one season before moving to Inter Milan after Juventus were relegated for match-fixing. However, he has since fallen down in the ranks at Inter, and spent most of last season on the bench, thus him wanting to leave.

Spurs were the first club to make an offer for Viera, offering him a one year contract with added bonuses, but now it seems Arsenal have matched that offer. Now its up to Viera whether he wants to return to the club where he was once loved, or go to their bitter rivals and more than likely be eternally hated by Arsenal fans.

Personally I think he will choose Arsenal. He spent nine great years their and I see no reason why he wouldn't return. However, I'm not sure Viera is the right choice for Wenger. Of course he will add experience but he is 33 now and in my opinion he is way past his best.
