Xabi's on his way

Thursday, July 30, 2009

Liverpool's start midfielder Xabi Alonso has handed in a transfer request according to a source from the club. Alonso has been strongly linked with big spending Spanish club Real Madrid and now it seems he wants to join the Spanish giants.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez had stood firm over Alonso often insisting he was staying at Anfield, and Madrid even admitted they were failing to get anywhere in signing him. Now, after a chat with Benitez, Alonso has submitted a transfer request and in the following days you can guarantee Madrid will make their approach.

But Alonso will not come cheap, with the Reds wanting in around £30 million for the Spanish star. In my opinion he is worth every penny. Alonso is a quality player and Liverpool made a great decision in signing him for £10 million from Real Sociedad in 2004. Now with his departure immanent, I think Liverpool's challenge for the title next season is a lot weaker without Alonso on their books.
