Celtic 0 - 2 Arsenal: Game over?

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

The first leg of the most anticipated game of the Champions League qualifiers is done, and a 0-2 victory for Arsenal in Park Head might mean the whole tie is over. The Gunners scored two away goals, courtesy of William Gallas and a Gary Caldwell o.g.

The hostile Celtic fans were supposed to give Celtic the upper hand, but Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insisted his squad were capable of dealing with the hostile atmosphere. Celtic matched Arsenal stride for stride in the first half, until an extremely lucky goal from Gallas gave the Gunners the lead. The Frenchman was trying to duck from Cesc Fabregas' freekick but the ball deflected off him and into the net.

"We had two huge slices of luck''. - Robin Van Persie

From then on Arsenal were always in control, and killed the tie in the 71st minute when Gael Clichy's cross was deflected into his own net by Gary Caldwell. With Arsenal surely heading to the Champions league group stage, unless Celtic win by two or more goals in London, football betting experts have priced Arsenal at 12/1 to win the Champions League, which might be worth a punt considering the excellent start to the season they have had.

In other football news, Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic is being linked with a move away from Old Trafford, Barcelona the interested party. Vidic arrived to Man United from Spartak Moscow in 2006, and has since became one of the worlds best defenders, hence Barcelona keen to sign the Serbian international. So maybe Vidic's time at United is coming to an end? Might you need to take him out of your fantasy football team? I know I will if the big Serb left for Spain.
