Fergie says sorry for calling Alan Wiley unfit

Saturday, October 10, 2009

Alex Ferguson has apologised to referee Mark Wiley for branding him unfit after his team drew 2-2 with Sunderland last weekend. Fergie was livid at the fact that he thought Wiley was slowing down the game.

"He was not fit enough for a game of that standard. The pace of the game demanded a referee who was fit''.

However, Fergie is now apologising for his comments after being able to admit it was rather inappropriate.

"I apologise to Mr Wiley for any personal embarrassment that my remarks may have caused and to The FA for going public with my views''.

"In retrospect, I accept that this could be deemed as expressing those views in an inappropriate forum''.

I can see exactly where Fergie was coming from to be honest. Maybe directing it straight at Wiley was unfair, but referee's are constantly slowing down the beautiful game these days and it could be said it is because they need a rest. To be fair, some matches are played at a frantic pace but referee's should be able to keep up, after all, what are they paid for?
