Upson free to leave Upton Park

Sunday, November 1, 2009

West Ham defender Matthew Upson is free to leave Upton Park in the January transfer window. The English centre-half has 18 months left on his contract at West Ham and boss Gianfranco Zola is keen to get money rather than see him leave for free. Upson nearly joined Liverpool last summer but a deal failed to materialise.

If Upson is to leave, it is likely to fee would be around £15 million.Liverpool, Tottenham, Everton and Manchester City have all expressed their interest in the player formerly of Arsenal and Birmingham.

Upson has been a regular in Fabio Capello's England squad, but to be honest, I think £15 million is a bit steep for a 31 year old defender. To be honest, I don't think anyone in West Ham squad comes near that price-tag, with the exception of Carlton Cole whom I rate very highly.
