Wenger planning £7 million bid for Fulham defender

Monday, January 18, 2010

According to The Mirror, Arsenal chief Arsene Wenger is planning a £7 million pound move for Fulham defender Craig Smalling. Smalling would be the second defensive addition to Arsenal, who most people would agree need a striker.

As most people know, Arsenal signed Sol Campbell last week for the rest of the season. Now, they have always had defensive problems, well at least they have ever since the invincible squad that went 49 games unbeaten in 2003/2004. However, I think the defense they have now is actually the best they have had in a while. Gallas has excelled since losing the captaincy, and Vermaelen has been an excellent signing. Personally I think Alex Song is the key to Arsenal's success. All the top teams have a player like him e.g Essien, Carrick/Fletcher, Mascherano, Yaya Toure etc.

Anyway, back to Smalling. To be honest, I hadn't even heard of him before today. He's 6'2 so he would right away have a good height advantage, which sometimes Arsenal lack. Personally, I don' think Wenger is going to spend £7 million on a player that young, especially considering his reluctance to buy English players, Sol Campbell an exception of course.

Speaking of Fulham, they recently signed a player from Roma called Okaka. Apparently the next big thing in football, so why not pop down and watch him play, it'll only cost £15 quid, a fantastic price for any Premier League game. An even better reason to watch them play, Bobby Zamora. He doesn't stay in good form for long so don't miss your chance, providing hes fit.
