Walcott needs to play if he is going to make the World Cup

Saturday, March 20, 2010

Theo Walcott is in serious danger of watching this years World Cup on the television after being left out of the starting line up again today. After David Beckham was ruled out of the World Cup last week Walcott had one hand on his ticket to South Africa, but he will need to play in order to seal his place on the plane to South Africa.

In saying that, Walcott did make the 2006 World Cup squad, and he hadn't even played 90 minuted for his club, Arsenal. But four years down the line and England have a lot more options in that position. Lennon, Wright Phillips, Joe Cole and Milner can all play on the wing and two out of the four are playing most weeks for their clubs.

You can argue the point that Walcott has been injured for a lot of the season, but now at full fitness he has failed to make the starting 11 in the two Arsenal games, despite coming on and making a positive impact. In my opinion, he will make the squad but he will need more games in order to be ready for what is sure to be a hectic World Cup campaign for England. Is he good enough? Yes, on his day can be one of the most dangerous wingers there is. Consistency has been a problem, a problem he can surely fix if he's playing week in week out.
